“A fictitious history of sports,
written by a fictional sports scientist.”

After a research on the different form of the sports from the linage of its legitimate history, KANGAWA wrote down a script in which a fictional sports scientist Mr. Tagi develops unique, yet hopeful research. And then this series of works go beyond the realm of art and expand into society.

EUGEN KANGAWA began this series of works by conducting research on sports with academic societies.
Afterwards, he produced a fictitious history of sports, as well as fictional protagonist, a sports scientist, “Mr. Tagi”.
“Mr Tagi’s Room” and “Mr. Tagi’s Dream” are both derived from these fictional creations.
“Mr Tagi’s Room” is a theatrical installation which offers viewers the opportunity to ‘peek’ into Tagi’s innermost sanctum.
“Mr Tagi’s Dream” takes a fictional, collagistic approach to documentary film making. Editing together disparate fragments of sports, Mr. Tagi has created a set of ‘Imaginary Sports’ that Mr. Tagi dreamed.
This series of works gives audience an impression of fictional documentary.
That is, this series of works go beyond the realm of art and liberate the obstructed reality by creating a cinematographic scene and represent the alternative potential vision go beyond the realm of art and expand into society.

※The system Mr. Tagi developed might be farfetched as an academic theory.
This is an entirely imagined story, but the “tool” that came out from this series of works was employed as an educational source by numerous institutions, and even became a part of the curriculum in elementary and international schools.

An aberrated approach, innocent viewpoint, however, enable it to find out the different form of the sports from the linage of its legitimate history ーperhaps, more essential sport than the existing one spring out.

“...After working on his history of sports, Mr. Tagi’s preoccupied mind fervently creates new games as he dreams. In the dream in which sports that are liberated from the linage of its legitimate history, finally he got free from the adversity.”

“Mr. Tagi’s Dream” is a video work which was created with an installation “Mr. Tagi’s Room”. This work takes a fictional, collagistic approach to documentary film making. Editing together disparate fragments of sports, Mr. Tagi has created a set of ‘Imaginary Sports’ that Mr. Tagi dreamed.

For example: ‘Breakdown/Relation’, in which a man attempts to communicate with animals through dance; ‘Diversions of Tools’, a chess based game played with an intricate system of tapping. Whilst at first this piece may seem comedic, this is gradually replaced by the sense of pure, innocent joy so often evoked through acts of creation.
Despite their focus on imaginary sports and fictional persons, these works are scrupulously rooted in a coherent intellectual system. They remain an impression of the end result ideally derived from detailed research and accumulated knowledge. Experienced together they form the potential for a new dynamism of thought.
This series of stories that Mr. Tagi realizes his wish, unexpectedly go beyond the realm of art and expand into society.
These works do not only criticize or fantasize the reality, but represent an alternative reality and liberate the real world.

Origin of Accidentalness ー Climate, Time, Domain, Exchange ー Aggregation, Competition, Cooperation, Disassociation ー Aesthetic, Gender ーSystem, America, Bigness: retracing scattered keywords, Mr Tagi conducted a hitherto unparalleled study into the history of sports with the combined use of theory and actual objects.

In the script, a following sentence is noted:
“Origin of Accidentalness –Climate, Time, Domain, Exchange –Aggregation, Competition, Cooperation, Disassociation –Aesthetic, Gender –System, America, Bigness: retracing scattered keywords, Mr Tagi conducted a hitherto unparalleled study into the history of sports with the combined use of theory and actual objects...”

Through this research Mr. Tagi invented a “tool” that automatically creates games and conditions.
Based on developed theories regarding the irreducible nature of group dynamics/systems, as well as architecture/bigness; this tool was designed to free sport from its predetermined nature.
Unsurprisingly, Mr. Tagi’s Room is overwhelmed with gadgets such as these that relate to his developed theory on sports. Peeking into his room, the audience will view this cluttered, private space as they would a film set; an archival account, as well as a record of the important objects and images from one man’s life and work.
